Kitchen Peninsulas vs. Kitchen Islands
Islands are featured in many kitchens—they are a convenient and attractive design element. But what about peninsulas? Kitchen peninsulas are similar to islands but have one side that is built into the wall or protrudes out from another counter surface.
Are you interested in an entirely new custom kitchen design? Should you install an island or peninsula?
Should You Install a Kitchen Island or Peninsula?
Some people prefer kitchen islands while some like the look of peninsulas. Other times, you may want an island because of its prevalence when really a peninsula may be a better option.
- Kitchen peninsulas work well in small spaces, when using an island can take up more space and create an inefficient layout. In small kitchens where there isn’t room for a table, peninsulas can also serve as a place for seating.
- A peninsula can serve as a fourth wall when you want to maintain a separate kitchen space from adjacent living spaces but still keep an open layout.
- A kitchen peninsula can serve as part of the banquette if you’re interested in banquette seating for your space.
There are clever ways to incorporate a peninsula into your kitchen—it just takes the right kitchen designers!
Islands & Peninsulas in the Kitchen
Both islands and peninsulas are fantastic kitchen design elements—neither is better than the other. The one you install will depend on:
- Your personal preference
- The size of your kitchen
- The shape of your kitchen
- Specific design needs or desires
