Where to Start With Your Kitchen Remodel

Posted on: November 12, 2013

Planning to remodel your kitchen? Interested in a brand new design? A lot goes into a kitchen renovation, so it’s normal to feel a little overwhelmed and anxious. Working with the right kitchen design company is important to helping ensure a successful project—and so is knowing where to start!

So, how do you know where to start with kitchen remodeling?

Starting a Kitchen Remodel

To begin a kitchen remodeling projects, there are a number of steps you can take, and many of these things can—and should—be discussed with your designer.

Have a Goal

It helps tremendously to define a goal for your remodel. What do you ultimately want out of your new kitchen design? Do you want a room that will raise the resale value of your home because you’re moving in two years? Do you want a space geared for entertaining and impressing guests? Need a kitchen for heavy-duty cooking every day of the week?

Consider Your Budget

Perhaps money isn’t your first priority when it comes to your new kitchen design, but it’s still a good idea to think about your budget. This doesn’t mean just financially—you should also think about the time. Is there a holiday or event coming up that would be affected if your kitchen was undergoing a remodel? Be sure to discuss both your money and time budget with your designer.

Ask (Yourself) Questions

Asking yourself and discuss with your designer the following:

  • What’s my lifestyle? For example, if you’re hardly ever home and like to eat quick meals on the go, a large table that takes up a lot of space doesn’t make as much sense as an island bar. Discussing this is a great way to help the designer tailor your kitchen to your lifestyle.
  • Do I have any special needs? Do you have young children and desire a family-friendly design?  Have a family member who uses a wheel chair? Need to accommodate pet needs? Be sure to discuss all this with your designer early on.
  • How can I clearly communicate what I want? You need to be able to explain what you want and how you want the kitchen to look. Using pictures is ideal for this.

Set Reasonable Expectations

We also recommend having realistic expectations—if you expect absolute perfection in every aspect of the entire project, you may be disappointed (unnecessarily). Remember, your kitchen remodel should overall be fun, and it will be worth it when it’s done.

Still Having Trouble?

If you’re having trouble beginning, it often helps to think about what you don’t want. What do you not like about your current kitchen? Feel like you don’t have enough counter space? Does your kitchen need more lighting? This can create a good starting point and give you the push you need.
