Taking the First Steps Towards Your Maryland or Washington, DC Kitchen Renovation
The kitchen is the heart of your home. While it’s known as being the place you prepare food, it’s also a gathering place for family, a place to socialize and hang out, and a place you throw elaborate dinner parties for guests. If you’re considering a complete kitchen renovation to make the heart of your home more functional and efficient, follow these steps in the early design process to set the renovation up for success.

Cut Pictures Out of Magazines
Home design magazines showcase some of the most beautiful, well-designed kitchens in the world. It’s a great place to turn for inspiration as you start to get an idea of what you want in your kitchen.
Cut out pictures of cabinet features, fixtures, hoods, hardware and layouts that appeal most to you. This helps you define your tastes and makes it easy to show a designer what you have in mind.
Visit a Showroom
Viewing pictures in a magazine is helpful, but visiting a kitchen showroom, like the Jack Rosen showroom in Rockville, MD, presents you with a more tactile, immersive experience. Bring magazine clippings with you, as well as the rough dimensions of your kitchen, to get an idea of what types of built-ins can fit in your existing space.
Define Your Needs
Showroom setups may be appealing to look at, but would they satisfy your family’s individual needs if they were transplanted directly into your kitchen? First, think about how you use your kitchen. Also, if your kids often do homework in the kitchen, an island with stools could accommodate their needs.
Then think about the size of your family. This dictates how large your kitchen layout should be and how much storage you require. What about your window space? Will you need new windows from Graceland Windows and Doors? If your kitchen is currently cramped and cluttered because there’s not enough space, this is an important consideration in the early planning stage. You may need to knock out a wall during the kitchen renovation to give you more space to work with. With knocking out walls, there’s also the consideration of whether your piping will be impacted by this. You’ll most definitely need water flow to the kitchen, so in this case, you’d benefit from contacting an Epoxy Piepelining Company.
If taking down walls isn’t in your renovation budget, installing cabinets with plenty of storage space-like the ones in our Spring 2015 Featured Kitchen-can get rid of excess clutter.
Set a Budget
Before you delve any deeper into the kitchen renovation process, determine how much you’re willing to spend. Giving your designer a budget upfront helps ensure a smooth project from start to finish. Open communication is the best way to avoid unpleasant surprises. Additionally, make sure you’ve set aside funding for planning approval if necessary – unpermitted home renovations can become a serious headache, so make sure you’ve got planning in place and the funds to do so.
Consult with a Kitchen Designer
Sill feel lost? A reputable kitchen designer will help you along in the design and idea process. Jack Rosen always begins a kitchen renovation consultation by asking you:
- The dimensions of your kitchen
- Your vision of your new kitchen
- How many people are in your household
- What activities take place in your kitchen
- How much storage you’ll need
- Your budget
If a kitchen designer doesn’t begin the process by asking you these important questions, find a different one!
