Benefits of Having a Kitchen With Two Islands

Posted on: September 8, 2014

Double Kitchen Island in Luxury Custom KitchenYou’ve undoubtedly seen an island in a friend’s or family member’s kitchen — maybe you even have one in your own. But what about two islands? If space permits, a double-island layout may be ideal for you.

Double Kitchen Islands

Many spacious kitchens have two islands. The design can vary, depending on the size and shape of the kitchen. Some common layouts include:

  • Two central islands next to each other, identical in shape and size
  • Two islands of different shapes and sizes, not adjacent to each other

Double islands only work well in kitchens that have the room — if the kitchen is too small, two islands (even small ones) can cramp the space. Whether you add two islands mainly depends on the shape and size of your kitchen and your lifestyle and needs.

How does your lifestyle come into play? Think about how you use the kitchen.

  • Do you cook large meals every night?
  • Do you frequently entertain and have guests over?
  • Does your kitchen serve purposes other than cooking? For example, is it the place where you help the kids with homework?
  • Do you often dine out and just eat a quick breakfast on the go?

Two kitchen islands can be beneficial to all kinds of lifestyles.

Cook large meals a lot? Having two islands can make your life much easier. One island can be used for preparing and cooking the food, while the other one can be the dishwashing station. Tip: The island used for washing dishes should have a large, deep sink (two kitchen sinks are ideal for avid cooks).

Often entertain in your kitchen? You can use one island for food prep, the other for guests to sit, complete with barstools and a wine fridge. This way, you can cook and socialize at the same time!

Have a multi-purpose kitchen? Whether you help the kids with homework or turn your kitchen into a hobby space when you’re not cooking, double islands can provide a creative solution. One island can be the “kid zone,” where homework can be done, snacks can be enjoyed, etc. Two-tiered islands are helpful if you want to prepare dinner at the same time the kids want to play or do homework. The second island makes for the perfect “hobby” spot.

Don’t use your kitchen much? If you don’t spend much time in the kitchen, double islands can still provide aesthetic value. Plus, you can add barstools to one island and have it serve as a kitchen table, perfect for quick meals on your way out the door. The other island can be the place for the dishes, with a sink and dishwasher.
