Is Kitchen Remodeling Worth It?
Are you going to be moving house soon> Have you found yourself asking “should I remodel my kitchen” so you can get your asking price? Or should you just redo the entire thing? It’s important that all the rooms in your house are the way you want them to be but as one of the rooms you spend the most time in, your kitchen should look and function exactly how you want! Remodeling it, whether you’re about to sell your house or not, can be very beneficial.
On the fence about remodeling your kitchen but not sure if it will be completely worth it?
Value of a Kitchen Remodel
Let’s start with Remodeling magazine’s 2013 Cost vs. Value Report.
In the South Atlantic region-which includes Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia-the average cost recouped value is 71 percent for a major kitchen remodel that costs $51,044 and about 75 percent for a minor remodel that costs $17,476. For upscale projects, the average cost of a remodel is about $103, 317 and the recouped value is a bit lower (about 60 percent), but you’re still regaining more than half the cost.
On the financial side of things, you would be able to recoup much of the cost of the remodel. Also keep in mind-particularly if you’re moving in the near future-that a remodeling project that is less than 20 percent of the average resale value in your area can typically be recouped when your home is sold. If you’re only going to be living in your home for the next five years or so, it can be wise to invest in a new kitchen design to boost your home’s market value and ensure it’s up-to-date.
It can be a good idea to ask yourself what you gain by remodeling. How happy are you with your kitchen? The true return on investment is the enjoyment you can gain. If you’re constantly cramped in your kitchen or it doesn’t fit your lifestyle and needs, it’s time for a new design! For example, a kitchen table that takes up a good amount of space probably works for a family of five who eats dinner together every night, but it doesn’t make as much sense for two people who don’t cook and eat quick meals on the go.
