Space-Saving Kitchens
A “nice kitchen” is different in every person’s eyes, but all truly great kitchens share a common characteristic—they are space-efficient. If your kitchen isn’t well designed, every task, from cooking to cleaning to socializing, can be frustrating. Space-saving kitchens are the most efficient, hands down!
If you always feel like your kitchen is cramped and doesn’t have enough space, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need a whole new design. If you’re interested in just a partial makeover that incorporates more space, it’s more than possible to achieve with the right kitchen designer. If you need a few ideas to get you started, hopefully you’ll get some inspiration from the list we’ve put together!
Space-Saving Kitchen Design Ideas
Here are some ideas for maximizing space in the kitchen—helpful for both those who want to completely remodel and want a new custom kitchen design and those who just want to partially remodel.
- Increase vertical space. Instead of building out, try building up. These kinds of design elements include hanging pot and pan racks, stacked cabinets, wall-mounted spice and knife racks, etc.
- Use chairs without arms. You may not think it, but using chairs without arms can save a lot of room around the kitchen table. These are especially helpful in small kitchens where space is extra tight.
- Consider an island. If room allows, you may want to install an island, perhaps even a two-tiered island. Kitchen islands can add extra cabinetry, countertop space, preparation and cooking surfaces, etc. They can even house a second sink, oven, dishwasher, or whatever else you need. If you don’t have room for an island and don’t want to expand the space, you can always use a mobile island.
- Buy quality appliances. More modern appliances tend to be more compact—not to mention more energy-efficient and attractive—and can help you save space in your kitchen.
- Install a top-bottom fridge and freezer, not a side-by-side model. Side-by-side refrigerators and freezers not only are less energy-efficient, but they also take up more space.
- Expand your cabinet space. Tall cabinets that stretch up to the ceiling (which can make your kitchen appear larger) and buying custom cabinets are practical options. Custom cabinets are worth it—and they can aesthetically enhance any space.
