Design Spotlight: Asian Kitchens

Posted on: October 3, 2011

If you like the minimalist kitchen style but want a foreign flair, an Asian kitchen design may be the perfect solution for you! Whether you need a kitchen design for your new home or are remodeling your current kitchen in the Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia area, call Jack Rosen today!

Asian Kitchen Countertops

Natural materials look best in Asian style kitchens – for a more authentic Asian look, stay away from man-made materials like stainless steel (which is a better look for contemporary or transitional kitchens). Both concrete and butcher block, a style of wood that provides a nice natural look, are great materials to use.

Asian Kitchen Cabinets

Any type of wood is fine for Asian style kitchen cabinets, but as for the design, it should be modest. Shaker style cabinets are perfect due to their clean, straight lines and minimalist characteristics. Asian kitchen designs are practical and efficient, and your cabinets should reflect that. They should be storage-savvy and simplistic, not ornate and distinct.

Asian Kitchen Walls & Floors

As mentioned, almost any type of wood is perfectly fine for an Asian kitchen, and you have a lot of choices when it comes to a color scheme as well. Dramatic colors like bold red work well in Asian kitchens, especially for Chinese styles. For Japanese kitchens, more natural tones are popular – tan, black, gray, brown, etc. Even light shades of yellow or green complement Asian style kitchens.

Asian Kitchen Accessories & Décor

When it comes to Asian kitchen decorations and accessories, you definitely won’t be limited. There are a ton of options out there that work well in any style of Asian kitchen. Some popular décor ideas include:

  • Bamboo plants, mats or other bamboo accessories
  • Oriental rugs
  • Silk lanterns
  • Silk wall hangings
  • Wood carvings

In general, Asian kitchens should be light and minimalist with an open, efficient layout. If this sounds like a kitchen design you would like for your home in Maryland, Washington, DC or Virginia, contact Jack Rosen today!
