Design Trends: What’s Hot in the Kitchen World

Posted on: September 16, 2011

Your kitchen design is ultimately up to you, but for those who are interested in the latest design trends, here are some hot kitchen design and remodeling trends:

Think dark – this isn’t as bad as it sounds! We simply mean white kitchens were hot last year, but now dark kitchens are in! It’s not a good idea to go overboard and have dark cabinets, countertops, walls and floors, but keep in mind that dark finishes for cabinets and countertops are becoming increasingly popular.

Suspended ceiling lights and pendant lamps – recessed lighting, though not exactly a thing of the past, is being seen less and less in kitchens today. Pendant lamps are one of the latest kitchen design trends becoming more popular, and smaller lights suspended from the ceiling (with trendy shades) are also in style. So make an impression on any visitors to your home and get some fancy ceiling lights too to blow them away.

Induction stoves – if you’ve never heard of an induction cooktop, you may want to look it up. These stoves, as you may have guessed, use induction heat. There is no open flame, and they heat up very quickly. Induction stoves, catching up to electric and gas ranges in terms of popularity, are energy-efficient and don’t leave as much of a mess!

Kitchen Remodeling Trends

Be open to an open plan – that’s right, open plan kitchens are very popular and are a practical solution, no matter what style your kitchen is. They are especially common in more modern spaces.

Mix it up – another kitchen design trend is the use of different materials. Don’t be afraid to give your kitchen some personality – a completely uniform kitchen with no variety in texture, material or color can be boring. So mix it up, not just with colors but with materials as well.

Wha'ts Hot in Kitchen Design

Convenient trash solutions – people are more frequently using efficient trash solutions like roll-out trash cans, even a side by side, roll-out trash and recycling unit. Instead of having a trash can sitting next to your counter or under your sink, the roll-out unit looks just like any other cabinet!

Spectacular storage solutions – there is a tendency nowadays for people to emphasize storage in their kitchen. Smart storage in a kitchen is not only essential for efficiency but it’s also one of the latest kitchen design trends! So don’t be afraid to put emphasis on your storage, whether you use cabinets that extend to the ceiling, add a kitchen island or install a hanging pot rack. And our kitchen designers can give you even more ideas!

Minimalism – we are seeing more and more people opting for contemporary and transitional kitchens, so minimalism is a hot design trend right now. However, this doesn’t mean your kitchen should lack creativity – a minimalist kitchen is not the same thing as a plain kitchen!
