New Kitchen Design Guide: Countertops & Lighting
In our last post, part two in the New Kitchen Design Guide series, we talked about kitchen cabinetry. In this post, were going to discuss countertops and lighting, the final important aspects of kitchen design.
Countertops
You have many different choices when it comes to kitchen countertops, including stone, stainless steel, wood and concrete.
Stone: Stone is one of the most popular choices for countertops, granite being one of the most widely used in the market. Its no wonder stone countertops are so appealing to homeowners they are beautiful and durable, and many types (such as soapstone) are low-maintenance. The countertop options available from Granco Granite to help rejuvenate the appearance of a modern kitchen are often the inspiration for many homeowners to do just that. In addition to granite, there are countless stones that work well as a countertop material:
- Soapstone
- Marble
- Limestone
- Travertine
- Slate
Some stones require more maintenance than others, but all are sure to add beauty to your kitchen, regardless of the style.
Stainless Steel: Stainless steel countertops are great for modern kitchens, and better yet, they are one of the most low-maintenance countertop materials available. For serious cooks and those who prepare large meals and entertain often, stainless steel countertops are optimal because they are so easy to clean and will last a long time!
Wood: Wood countertops, though not nearly as prominent as granite countertops, are ideal choices for a number of kitchen styles. Wood countertops whether butcher block, oak or anything else work well in Shaker kitchens, rustic kitchens and Tuscan kitchens.
Concrete: Concrete countertops are gaining popularity in the kitchen design market, and its not hard to see why! They are available in a wide range of colors, durable and truly customizable they can be handcrafted into any shape and design.
Lighting
As is the case with almost everything in a kitchen design, you have a few different options when it comes to lighting. Many people think of recessed lighting, but there are so many other possibilities that allow you to get more creative and give your kitchen some personality!
Pendant Lighting: Pendant lighting is a viable option for all types of kitchens, from traditional and contemporary to transitional and rustic and everything in between. While glass chandeliers work well in traditional, elegant spaces, wrought iron pendant lights can nicely accent a rustic space. For many people, custom pendants are the best choice as they suit almost any kitchen.
Task Lighting: Task lighting is a smart option for those who do a lot of cooking. This type of lighting can be installed in a number of different places where more lighting is necessary, particularly above stoves and sinks.
Under-Cabinet Lighting: This type of lighting is good for brightening hard-to-reach nooks and crannies and countertop space that could use more light. Under-cabinet lighting is convenient because it doesnt matter what the style is you wont be able to see it at all!
Over-Cabinet Lighting: Over-cabinet lighting, like the name sounds, is installed above your cabinets and can give the illusion of height. Its great for making your kitchen appear taller and more open.
